Armed Security Guard Requirements

armedThe state of Delaware requires armed security guards to be licensed and when applying for this licensing it will be to the Department of Public Safety. This agency regulates the amount of hours training will be needed both in security and weapons to ensure the applicant is prepared to work in the security sector. There will be both personal and training requirements in order to qualify to apply for the Delaware armed security guard license.

The armed security guard will be issued a license after the following requirements are met:

  • The armed security guard will be at least 20 years of age
  • The applicant will have a high school diploma or an equivalency certification
  • Proof of the ability to work legally in the United States
  • The applicant will be fingerprinted
  • There will be an FBI style background check
  • There will be drug testing
  • The applicant will have completed the state specified training
  • The applicant will have no felony record or have been convicted of a violent misdemeanor

The armed security guard in the state of Delaware is required to take training courses in security and weapons training at a state certified facility. The courses are designed to ready the armed guard for work in the security sector and to handle emergency situations that can occur. These situations include both criminal and emergency medical, fire and other hazards.

There are courses that are approved by the Delaware Department of Public Safety and will include:

  • Professionalism in the workplace
  • Legal and ethical issues
  • Emergency medical training including CPR
  • Restraint of suspects
  • The use of handcuffs
  • Weapons training will include marksmanship and target practice
  • The legal use of deadly force
  • The proper use of weapons

The training course is devised to prepare the armed security guard to work safely and competently within the security sector in both public and private settings. They are also designed so the armed security guard has the knowledge of the laws when carrying a weapon and the correct way to handle the weapon. The Delaware armed security guard license when issued means the security guard can work in a variety of settings within the security sector that might include holding a valid Delaware driver’s license. The license that will be issued by the Delaware Department of public safety will be valid for a two-year period at the end of which the applicant will need to renew the license prior to the expiration date if they are still employed as an armed security guard. This will also include the weapon’s license, which will include a refresher course yearly, which they must qualify to keep their licensing current.
